The story so far...
Earlier today, I dropped my definitive, physically-grounded predictions for the 2026 F1 season. We talked about active aero, thermal expansion loopholes, and breaking the physics of braking. But my friend @fulltimemclarenfan also dropped their predictions. So what do we get when we put them side by side?Let's compare the data.
Where we absolutely agree (Hell yea!)
Sometimes, great minds think exactly alike.
Mercedes taking the Constructors' Championship
We both saw this coming. The W17 chassis is an engineering marvel. After 4 years in the wilderness, Mercedes is back on top. Hell yea!
Lewis Hamilton stuck in P7
Wait, what? Lewis down in 7th? Both of us put the seven-time champ in the exact same spot. Whether it's the fact that he's past his prime (as my friend says) or the fact that the new brake-by-wire system fundamentally breaks his late-braking style (my theory)... we both know it's going to be a rough year for him.
Oscar Piastri locked in P6
Exactly the same prediction. Hell yea! These low-grip, high-drag cars just don't suit him yet.
Haas is the midfield king (P5)
A flawless midfield operation. We both put Haas in 5th for the Constructors! Bearman and Ocon are going to drag that reliable Ferrari engine to the promised land.
Aston Martin is a disaster
We both agree this team is a complete mess. The Honda engine vibrating itself to pieces. A fundamentally broken car. Enjoy glorified public test sessions, Fernando.
Confessions of a delusional McLaren fan...
I am scarily obsessed with analyzing car physics. My friend? Scarily obsessed with hoping their favourites magically win. Lets look at where @fulltimemclarenfan gets it totally wrong:
Max Verstappen winning the title?
Honestly, I'm not really sure how my friend arrived at this one. They think Max's pure talent will win out. But did they forget the Ford engine? It violently vibrates! It's a glass cannon causing microscopic cracking under race distances! You can't win a World Championship when your engine physically shatters every third race. Max gets P3 at best. George Russell is going to systematically monopolize the top step of the podium.
Norris in P3?
Hopium from @fulltimemclarenfan. They think McLaren's mid-season development will save them. But they got the Mercedes power unit dimensions late! They have a compromised, draggy chassis. On power-sensitive circuits, that baseline drag penalty leaves Lando utterly defenseless. P5 is his ceiling this year.
Ferrari down in 4th?
My friend thinks Ferrari will fall apart and drop behind McLaren and Red Bull in the WCC.
Uh-oh.
They are heavily underestimating Charles Leclerc. Ferrari played by the rules and built a peaky aerodynamic beast. Leclerc’s "V-style" cornering perfectly masks the mid-corner instability. They are the only definitive threat to Mercedes. I have them in 2nd.
Recap
We went over the agreements. Lots of overlapping ideas on the midfield. Treat them as gospel if they're helpful to you. We went over the disagreements.
So long as you remember that engine reliability is king, you'll be fine. Enjoy getting bogged down in the copium of a Verstappen or Norris title fight
